Why do most men wait too long before seeking counseling?

Updated: Aug 3

Many men do not seek counselling when the first signs of stress, anxiety, anger, sadness, or relationship problems appear. They wait. They try to handle it alone. They work harder, stay busy, distract themselves, or tell themselves that things are not serious enough.

By the time they finally reach out, the problem has often affected their sleep, health, marriage, family life, work performance, or sense of self.

This delay is not always because men do not care. In many cases, they care deeply. They care about their families, their responsibilities, their image, and their ability to remain strong. But many men have learned to treat emotional pain as something to tolerate quietly, not something to understand.

So the real question is not, “Why don’t men want help?”

A better question is, “What have men been taught about needing help?”
