Competitive Landscape and Industry Size

parabolic trough collectors Explore the benefits of parabolic trough collectors for efficient solar thermal power generation systems.

Parabolic Trough Collectors are a prominent and mature technology within the field of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP). They are a type of solar thermal collector that uses a series of curved, trough-shaped mirrors to focus direct sunlight onto a receiver tube positioned along the focal line of the trough. This process concentrates the sun's energy, converting it into high-temperature heat.

How They Work

The fundamental principle of a parabolic trough collector is to harness the geometry of a parabola. All incoming parallel rays of light, like those from the sun, are reflected by the parabolic mirror to a single focal point or, in the case of a trough, a focal line. A receiver tube, often with a selective coating to maximize absorption and minimize heat loss, is placed at this focal line.

A heat-transfer fluid (HTF), such as synthetic oil or molten salt, is circulated through the receiver tube. As the fluid flows, it is heated to very high temperatures, typically ranging from 300°C to over 500°C. This superheated fluid is then transported to a central power block. Here, it is used to heat water, creating high-pressure steam that drives a conventional steam turbine to generate electricity.

Parabolic trough systems are typically designed to track the sun's movement throughout the day using a single-axis tracking system. This allows them to maintain focus on the receiver tube, ensuring maximum energy collection.

Market Size and Growth

The Parabolic Trough Collector market is a significant part of the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) sector. This growth is driven by the increasing global demand for clean energy solutions that can provide dispatchable power, meaning they can supply electricity on demand, even after the sun has set. Parabolic trough collectors, particularly when integrated with thermal energy storage (TES) systems, can provide a reliable source of power for 24/7 operation.
